Jeff Fieldhack, research director for Counterpoint Research, said the reported Apple production cut could also be part of the iPhone maker's normal launch process of over-ordering devices to be prepared for an initial customer rush and then trimming orders as sales trends become clearer.įieldhack said iPhone 13 sales appear to be healthy and higher than last year's iPhone 12, and Counterpoint is not changing its estimate of 85 million to 90 million iPhone 13 sales for the fourth quarter. Apple/Screenshot by Sarah Tew/CNET The M1 processor's reign as Apple's flagship chip may be. Shipments are scheduled to commence as early as July. PT The successor to Apple's M1 chip may be around the corner. With its massive purchasing power and long-term supply agreements with chip vendors, Apple has weathered the supply crunch better than many other companies, leading some analysts to forecast that iPhone 13 models released in September would have a strong sales year as consumers looked to upgrade devices for 5G networks. According to a new supply-chain report from Nikkei Asia based on sources familiar with the matter, the Apple-designed chip has now entered mass production. Apples WWDC 2023 keynote event is set to be held at 10:00 a.m. The chip crunch has put immense pressure on industries from automobiles to electronics, leading many automakers to temporarily suspend production. Mass production has not yet begun, and the latest information suggests a launch ahead of the December holidays. Texas Instruments also gave a soft revenue outlook that month, hinting on chip supply concerns for the rest of the year. The semiconductor shortage and ongoing pandemic could force Apple to cut its second-half production target for the iPhone, Bloomberg News reported Tuesday. I guess we might start to see some leaked specs and performance indicators after July.In July, Apple forecast slowing revenue growth and said the chip shortage, which had started hitting its ability to sell Macs and iPads, would also crimp iPhone production. We don't have any data pointing to the extra capabilities and/or performance that will be available with the M2 but with its progress so far it doesn't look like it is going to misfire. The consensus seems to be that the M1 Macs are an improvement, with peppy performance in CPU and graphics, with noticeably better battery life, where that applies. With the M1 there was even memory on die, facilitating fast and flexible processor-memory I/O from the unified memory pool, but making the 8GB or 16GB Mac you bought not upgradable in this respect.Īpple recently launched refreshed iPad Pro and iMac computer models featuring the Apple M1. This type of chip integrates CPU, GPU, and other accelerators and I/O in the same package. The source says it is an SoC like its predecessor. Understandably there isn't a lot of info about the M2 around. With the insider info being reported in Taipei, it looks like the leaky side of the equation is at TSMC or one of the companies that work closely with it. April 27, 2021, 12:48 PM EDT The successor to the Apple-developed M1 chip will reportedly be used in MacBooks set to ship during the second half of 2021. However, neither Apple nor TSMC would comment on the Nikkei Asia report. The M2 is being produced by TSMC on its latest 5-nanometer plus, or N5P, process. That would allow Apple to release new/refreshed MacBooks and other form factors in H2 this year, hastening its transition from the Intel x86 architecture. The insiders indicate that shipments of the new chips, tentatively dubbed 'Apple M2 processors' could begin in July. Apple's next generation 'Apple Silicon' processors started to roll off mass production lines this month, according to sources speaking to Nikkei Asia.
